Challenge

Corresi is a B2C application that connects consumers with class action lawsuits they may be eligible to join.

My team was tasked with researching, prototyping, and testing design concepts for new features to help Corresi expand its platform into the B2B space.

Research Insights

To better understand the space, I conducted interviews with 4 law firm professionals. The team also spoke with a law student, conducted a literature review and also competitive analysis. The following insights were used to inform design decisions and act as guidelines to ensure the product matches user needs.

Mismatch between responsibility and authority

Legal teams operate with a structural gap between strategy and execution. Attorneys direct the work, but paralegals handle the bulk of day-to-day tasks and still require attorney sign-off at key decision points. While attorneys hold higher authority in law firms, they often rely on support staff such as paralegals for important day-to-day work.

Associate Attorney

firms vary wildly, requiring adaptable solutions

Firms vary in how they approach resolution. In mass tort cases, clients can settle independently, and firms often prefer to close cases early rather than extend litigation. Cases rarely reach trial, settlements happen last-minute, and paralegals carry much of the operational load, revealing a significant disconnect between legal education and the fast-moving, unpredictable nature of actual legal work.

ai is becoming embedded in the workflow

AI is the most impactful in stages involving scale, repetition, and large datasets, which is why class action litigation is a particularly strong use-case for AI adoption. Current execution of AI tools appears to be high friction, marking an opportunity space.

competitors focus on efficiency over client communication

We studied four major competitors across the legal process, SimplyConvert, Lawmatics, EvenUp, and CasePacer; and found that tools focus on speed and efficiency, leaving client communication lacking.

Key features

Through speaking with law firm professionals, I also learned that class action law firms acquire new clients one of three ways:

Word of mouth

☹ high-quality leads but inconsistent and unpredictable

Manually searching through product reviews on e-commerce websites and customer complaints on social forums

Paid Marketing to post ads, mainly on social media.

☹ Expensive, paying for quantity over quality

In all of these cases the law firms initiate contact. What if we could initiate the process from the client side?

submit-a-case

As opposed to a cold and dry form, I had the idea of a more warm human-centered approach, considering our research findings. Potential clients will have the ability to submit their own potential cases on the Corresi consumer-facing app. The AI case assistant will collect necessary information from the client. To do this, the case assistant will converse with the client, because everyone has a unique and personal story to tell. After some feedback, Andrea ran with the idea and created the high-fidelity mockup, which was well-received by our partner!

Case matching process

After client-submitted cases enter Corresi's database, the Corresi platform will facilitate the start of this relationship.law firms will be presented with submitted cases that match their selected criteria. Based on provided information, law firm staff are able to select cases they are interested in. The client will then pick a law firm to represent them from the list of interested firms. Payment occurs at time of successful match. The law firm pays a fee to Corresi and the client is not charged for the service.

Testing and Iteration

To evaluate designs, I put the prototype into the hands of law firm staff. I focused on concept testing with moderated usability test participants as we could dive deeper with questions as they completed their tasks. I created a clickable Figma prototype (this was not possible with live AI prototype) in order to set success criteria in OptimalSort. Success metrics such as completion rate and directness were gathered from unmoderated usability test participants as they completed the same tasks.

Concept testing

Are firms even interested in having client initiated cases? According to TAM (Technology Acceptance Model), the majority of unmoderated test participants are likely to use the feature.

However, multiple participants expressed skepticism and doubt of its value relative to cost and time.

flow and information

While the flow overall made sense, key information was missing especially regarding the case details.

  • Many participants found the short two-line summary to be insufficient. They require more specifics such as incident date, severity of issues, and medical documents.

  • Law firm staff gravitate towards wanting to call potential clients as soon as possible. Time is of the essence and they are a highly competitive group of people.

ui and accessibility

Participants described the dashboard as "overwhelming", "busy", and "overcomplicated" but most were able to complete their tasks after some exploring. Visual and cognitive accessibility could be improved through increasing color contrast among between grays and leveraging our natural instinct to read left to right.
